In Leogane, there are only private hospitals.
All visits and all medicines must be paid for, but most people live below the poverty line. Earning less than a dollar a day, one doesn’t have enough money for basic meals; so if a person gets sick, she/he just postpones a hospital visit.
But in a suburban neighborhood, there is the Emergency Medical Center, where treatment is always granted, and, when available, medicines are provided.
Dr. Toni Bistine, who studied in Cuba, and leads the Center, has adopted the principle that access to healthcare is a right of everyone. “We never say No.”
People know his approach, and, when necessary, they go to the Center.
They call the clinic "Kay Doktè Toni" (Doctor Toni's House), because he and his staff are always available, and indeed his cell phone number is written at the Center’s entrance.
At all times, he is available.
BUT THERE WAS A PROBLEM: there was no electricity, and at night flashlights are unwieldly to use.
Therefore, WE INSTALLED SOLAR PANEL!
Thank you for your contribution!!!

WHERE WE ARE ACTIVE:
Our Program runs mainly in Leogane, the epicenter of the earthquake of 2010, where the earthquake's impact was most dramatic and 85% of buildings were destroyed.
Initially our projects were realised as a response to the emergency, and later they evolved into initiatives that promote long-term local
development that is driven by the skills, motivation and determination
of Haitian communities.
We also support smaller activities in other part of the country, such
as Cité Soleil (the largest slum in Port au Prince) and Fondol
(a mountain community in the area of Cabaret).
HOW WE WORK
Our projects are designed by local groups (such as associations,
schools, communities, and educational centers). We develop the ideas for the projects together with the local groups with the goal of WORKING (Italian: fare) towards a more stustainable development and promote EDUCATION (Italian: educare) with children, adults and communities.
Support from abroad is used to provide local financial assistance, training, participatory monitoring and evaluation. In Italy and Switzerland we promote the Haitian culture, intercultural education activities and fundraising.
